THE RP SAMPLE »
A silver sliver of moon hung low on the horizon, the little light it gave off shining weakly through the clear night. Everything was bathed in a silver sheen, from the looming and leafless trees to the blanket of fresh snow on the ground. The forest was a vision in black and white and gray, broken only by the red-brown mosaic of blood on churned snow, and the whirling patterns woven into strips of torn silk waving weakly in the cold night wind.
The scent of blood was heavy in the air, coppery but strangely sweet...To a carnivore, anyway. Tsuzuki's tongue darted quickly over her lips as she surveyed the scene with nervous scrutiny, mauve eyes darting back and forth to make sense of the shapeless shadows. Almost as heavy as the scent of blood was the scent of bear.
To one side of the road lay what was once a horse, near the splintered remains of what once was the carriage it pulled. Long claw marks ran along the beast's flank, and it appeared to have been torn open but not eaten, and of its burden only a ruined mass of wood remain, overturned in a snow bank. Of the three human bodies, two were men-- both only in light armor, neither looking much the part of a guard. (Especially not now anyway, seeing as they were dead). Around them lay broken arrow shafts, and what appeared to be half a bow-- the other half was still clutched in one of the dead man's hands. Like the horse, both bore claw marks far too large to have belonged to Tsuzuki, or any wolf for that matter-- it had definitely been a kuma yokai.
A few hundred yards away, underneath a tree shot full of arrows, (the men hadn't been totally useless apparently, just lousy shots), was the body of a young woman in many layers of ripped silk. Not elaborate enough to denote nobility, but probably wealthy none the less. It was a curious arrangement, but none of it meant anything to Tsu. She didn't concern herself in mortal affairs-- there was simply no point. Humans were odd creatures, and it could best be left at that.
Though the scent of bear was absolutely repulsive and the meat was bordering no-longer-fresh, she was still drawn in by it. Tsuzuki didn't play the part of scavenger very often, and she only did when she was really desperate (pride certainly had a factor in that, and she hated the thought of eating something when she didn't really know what happened to it)... and right now, she wasn't that desperate. Yet.
Taking tentative steps, she came forward, taking great pains to mute the sound of snow crunching under her feet. Tensed and alert, she was trying to pick up any trace, be it scent or sound (her eyesight was crap even in the day, so forget that), of the killers... nothing.
Yukiko padded at her heels, feeding off her mistress' apprehension-- her ears were back, her tail was down, and she held herself low to the ground. She didn't move on her own, but waited for the demoness to step first... quite a contrast to her usual lively manner.
But it seemed that the coast was clear for now.
Tsuzuki relaxed visibly when she finally came to the conclusion that she-- they -- were alone, and traces of her usual arrogance returned. She didn't stand as straight. Her arms crossed. A light smirk played at her lips. She held her head high as she made her way into the worst of the carnage.
Another set of footprints or two didn't stand out against the already disturbed snow cover, and nobody could have looked more like they belonged in that scene than Tsuzuki. Her skin was literally as white as the snow, but more translucent, giving her a pinkish tinge slightly more reminiscent of a natural skin tone. Her hair was also white, hanging in messy, tangled waves down to her mid back. Like the rest of her, Tsuzuki's eyes lacked pigment completely, allowing for the pink to mauve muscle to show through beneath. Even her garb was white-- she wore the traditional fur skirt of her people, with a simple metal chest plate... And while this made for excellent camouflage in the winter, the rest of the time it was really just a nuisance.
One more glance around told Tsuzuki there was nothing left of interest here, and with a silent command to her companion (it would have looked like a mere twitch of her tail to anyone else, but to Yukiko it was just as important as something words could have expressed) she started off in the direction that smelled least of kuma. The wind was starting to pick up, which made things a little confusing. And with the wind came flurries of snow, though Tsuzuki couldn't tell if it was fresh, or if it was simply being blown off the tress.
It was most certainly fresh snow, that was certain. In the hour that Tsuki and Yuki had started back off into the woods, the little flurries had turned back into a full scale storm. It was freezing cold, and everything was white-- Tsuzuki didn't have the best eyesight to begin with, but this was getting ridiculous. Deep snow wasn't too fun either, especially when you weren't very tall to begin with. While it wasn't unusual for Tsu to not really have a clue where she was going, at this point she could honestly say she was lost.
She couldn't see, she couldn't hear anything but whistling wind, it was so cold she couldn't smell anything but... bear? Oh crap. It wasn't the actual bears that had done the killing before-- no, the scent was too stale. But Tsuzuki knew where they were now...
Owch
Something hard connected with her foot, and the little demoness almost tumbled headfirst into the snow-- and almost landed on top of the fast-freezing body of an all too familiar mortal. Exactly where they started. Just perfect. Tired, cold, hungry, lost, and back to the foul smelling clearing by the road.
Growling lightly to herself, Tsuzuki pulled herself up into the nearest tree (careful to shake the snow off it first, while not covering herself-- it only sort of worked) while Yukiko curled up underneath it. The snow had to stop soon, it was coming down way too hard to stay that way for long. Hopefully.
Just freakin' perfect...[/color]
