[/i] No part of her was pleased, even the part that loved Seiichi. She had no idea how to get rid of it and did not want anyone else to see her shame, so she quickly birthed a little girl. Even though she was a youkai, she couldn't bring herself to kill the baby and so she took her to Seiichi.
He was pleased to see her; his wife was not. She kept her young sons - the oldest being ten - and her beautiful girl toddler crowded around her on the other side of the small house, cowering in fear. The inugami showed Seiichi a pretty baby that looked a lot like himself. "I cannot keep her," said the youkai, "nor would I if I could. She is yours to do with as you wish." She gave the baby to Seiichi and turned to leave before adding, "Name her Inusaki."
His wife urged her to get rid of the child, but he refused. "She could help us out around the farm or serve her sister," he said shortly, but in truth he was smitten with his less-than stunning daughter. So Inusaki, dubbed Saki by her doting Papa, was raised as a mortal. She was shy and quiet and did not possess any demon powers. Her step-mother did not like her, and the old woman poisoned her children against the hanyou. Saki did her best to ignore her, but it hurt so bad that the only mother she had ever known did not love her. By the age of ten her self confidence was nil. Her half-sister, who was three years her senior, delighted in making her life hell. Her two eldest brothers, ages twenty and nineteen, had married and established their own homes. The third brother in the line was only seventeen but was already courting a young neighbor girl. Her youngest brother, five years older than her, often took part in systematically mentally and emotionally destroying the young hanyou. Her father could not curb his children or help his youngest. Faced with a difficult decision, he finally decided his youngest child should be sent away.
As no one in the village or in the nearby village would be willing to take her, he decided it was beset if his beloved daughter go live with someone who had personal ties to demons. After months of searching in between working the farm and trying to keep the peace in his house, he finally found an old recluse who lived on a mountain. She had had a hanyou bastard who had been cruelly murdered by fearful villagers. She was bitter, but Seiichi was desperate. The old woman, who was named Natsuki, crossly refused at first, but relented when Seiichi told her his daughter's story. She could sympathize with the girl; at least her own son had been loved. And even in her advanced age she still wished for a family. So Seiichi brought Saki to Natsuki and, with a kiss on the forehead, walked out of his daughter's life.
Living with the old woman was a tense experience for the first few weeks. Saki worried that that the woman would grow to hate her and abuse her, so the ten-year-old girl worked hard on making herself invisible. Natsuki thought the child odd for she never smiled, laughed, skipped or played. She did her chores, ate her meals and slept. That was it. Finally the old woman snapped at her. "Why don't you live?" she railed. "Do something, be something, be alive! You are flesh and blood, not stone and mortar!" And with that Saki burst into tears. Contrite, the old woman comforted the weeping child, and Saki allowed herself to be comforted. After that, they reached a sort of understanding that blossomed into a loving mother/daughter relationship. Saki knew no sadness for eight years thereafter until Natsuki peacefully passed away in her sleep. Saki stayed in the lonely house until her grief subsided. Then she set out to explore the world as Natsuki had made her promise.
Her first destination was her father's house where she was greeted with bad news: Her father had died several years ago. Saki was sad to hear that. Step-mother Saito was as bitter as ever and flat-out refused to see Saki. Her three eldest brothers did receive her, though. Her youngest brother had been killed by bandits on the way to the city, and Saki couldn't bring herself to her sorry for that. The others, though, welcomed her cautiously. They were like most mortals, fearful of demons, but they had know her since she was in diapers. Her sisters-in-law kept their children away from her, but Saki didn't mind; the children were unknown to her, merely names. To her surprise she found her brothers' acceptance meant little to her; ten years ago it would have been everything, but now the words were meaningless. She did inquire about her sister's whereabouts. Her brothers told her that the chit had been made a concubine of a minor lord; Saki fancied that didn't please the vain girl much. She stayed long enough to make the villagers uncomfortable before bidding her brothers farewell.
She traveled the land, savoring each step of her journey. Once she met her mother; it was an unpleasant experience to say the least. The woman reminded her of her human sister, only a thousand times more obnoxious. The inugami seemed sorry that Seiichi had died but expressed no remorse over abandoning her hanyou child. Saki had quit her company quickly and resolved not to see her again. Fate was on her side, for her mother was killed several weeks after there encounter.
Besides the occasional small scuffle with minor demons, Saki drifts through Nippon quietly. Sometimes she finds orphans and takes them in until they leave or some other home is found for them. Human children fear her, youkai children look down on her, and hanyou children do not trust her, but eventually nearly all of them grow to love her. Her maternal instincts kick in around children, and they respond to that loving mother quality. Sometimes her midwifery skills are needed by those who cannot afford such a luxury or are too secluded from the world. Even those sometimes refuse her aid. Those who accept go through phases of fearing her, needing her, trusting her and, finally, befriending her. Some do not get past the first two, but most do. Somewhere along her journey she came into the possession of a demonic sword. Saki realized she'd need some way of defending herself and sought out a swordsman much like Totosai. He removed one of her fangs and created a fine blade. Its demonic aura was enough to make one choke, but Saki effortlessly controlled it. She seldom has had to use it, but one never knows when one will need it.

True Patterson, complete with his customary suit, emerged from a sleek European car. He was wearing sunglasses, and his bluetooth was dangling from his ear. A few of the people outside paused to looked at him curiously. For a moment the passersby were reminded of Will Smith from Men in Black. He looked as if he was CIA, but surely no agent would be that obvious.
True stood with confidence to the entrance, but on the inside he was hardly containing his glee. The day had finally arrived! He took a deep breath before entering, which turned out to be a good thing for he forgot to breathe for a moment. Removing his sunglasses, he stared in awe at the array of mystical animals. Odd bird creatures, cross-breeds and - oh, God - dragons surrounded him. He drew in another fortifying breath before delving into the heart of the beast.
He passed a young redhead and paused to look at her wares. To his surprise he saw she had a...faerie? The little creature looked delightful, but True didn't linger long. The first thing that really captured his interest was something called a Cortanian. It so unusual that True didn't think he had ever heard of it before. He thought about petting it, then decided it wasn't worth it to lose his fingers.

Stephanie huffed indigently at Lore. He was criticizing her every move as she arranged her display. She briefly considered how satisfying it would be to step on him. A stray, orange lock fell on her face, and she shoved it away with more violence than was necessary. "Listen," she growled at the faerie, "shuddup before I decide to feed you to a dragon." She turned and stalked a few paces away.
Lore was in a sealed but ventilated fish tank. There was soft earth beneath him and grass around him. There was a barren spot where he had a small bed that had probably belonged to some little girl's doll. There was also a tiny table and a large spool that Stephanie insisted would do as a chair for him. He moved over to the bed and sat down. He looked around curiously. There were lots of things he had seen before, lots of things he had heard of, and lots of things that he wasn't quite sure what they were. Stephanie's camp was near another woman's who happened to have a baby dragon. Lore was amused to see it was bigger than him.
Stephanie came back and put a sign on the fish tank, blocking Lore's view. His tiny face became dark with anger; she just smiled pertly before flouncing off. The sign read:
Name: Lore
Gender: Male
Age: ?
Height: 5 3/4"
Species: Faerie
Diet: Any type of plant, fruit or vegetable

Lore knew how to read but only in runes and other magical tongues. He wished he knew what the sign said.
