[/i]after men! Kami help him...
It took some time, but soon the knowledge became too much to bear. It didn't help that viewing the naked forms of some his village friends was enough to make him burn. He'd see people kissing, and he would wish he was the girl. His eyes would follow certain handsome young men, and his heart would race. It was maddening. He felt guilty at his urges, but they were uncontrollable, unstoppable... So he told Shun. At first his brother thought it a poor joke, but when he saw the younger boy was serious, Shun was eager to comfort him. He said it was alright, that some people simply feel that way, and it wasn't wrong. "Buddha never said it was wrong," Shun told his brother. "He just said to behave oneself in such acts." Koji was relieved. No matter what Buddha may or may not have said, these urges just weren't the norm. And for one as young as Koji, it can cause a lot of unnecessary stress.
The next year tragedy struck. A viral pandemic gripped the village, laying nearly everyone low. Within a couple of days, five people were dead. The Ueda monks left the temple to help immediately, but within two days they, too, were sick. Yoshihara was by far the most ill; he was so sick he was in a perpetual comatose state. Uiko could hardly walk and threw up whatever she ate. Shun spent most of his days in a fevered delirium. Koji was not as sick as his family, but that was scant comfort. He struggled to take care of his family, but it proved to be vain. Only two days after falling ill, Yoshihara died. Uiko went mad with grief and lost her interest in life; she began to waste away. Koji had to remove his father's body, and the process nearly killed him. After the body was removed and painfully prepared for burial, the young boy collapsed in a mixture of grief and exhaustion. He got progressively worse after that.
Shun was the first to recover. He was stricken with grief upon seeing his father's prone body; he hadn't known Yoshihara had died for he had been delirious for the past several days. He tended to his mother and brother, working feverishly to save them. Uiko, though, simply did not have the will to live, and so, three days later, died. It took a week for Koji to become lucid. Much to the older boy's surprise, Koji shed tears at hearing Uiko died. But he had always been a mama's boy; and he had been her baby boy. When the remaining Uedas had recuperated, they immediately set out to help the villagers; nearly a third had died. Most had already been buried, so Shun and Koji set themselves to the grim task of burying the rest.
Once the dust had settled down Shun took over the temple master's duties while Koji assumed the roles the former had filled. Koji spent most days tending the village; the rest were spent in a bland stupor as he did the mundane chores around the temple grounds. For a few years the brothers lived in an unremarkable gray existence until Shun made the startling announcement he had decided to marry. And so he did. He picked a pretty girl of fifteen who Koji did not care for but did not say. Now eighteen, he decided it was time to find his own destiny as his brother had successfully settled into his. He bid his brother and sister-in-law farewell and departed from the temple.
Koji travels across Nippon, exorcising demons for the most part to earn some coin. He stays at hotels or at the homes of the headmen, though there are some days where he must rough it. He travels alone and never lets anyone get close to him. He has had a few affairs since leaving the Ueda Temple, but they were fleeting and strangely unsatisfying. What he's searching for he doesn't know, but he tries not to dwell on that missing factor.
