It had been a boring, boring day at school, and Kaname was nothing short of exhausted. It had seemed like her teachers had droned on and on about nothing. On this point she was slightly mistaken, as they had all been talking about the days lessons and exams that would be coming up. But the Kururugi girl was completely unaware of what they spoke about, as she had been dozing in class. She had been up late the night before working on a important paper about the Sengoku period for her History of Japan class, and hadn't gone to bed until a quarter past three that morning. And then her mother had decided to so rudely awaken her at six-thirty in order to get her to help with breakfast. Really, why her? It wasn't even as though she was that great of a cook. But she had done so without complaint, and then headed off to K University. And now that she was home she wanted nothing more than to take a nice, hot relaxing bath before falling into her nice warm bed. Too bad her father had asked her to fetch him some charms from the storage house at the back of their property. Although she was happy that her family's shrine was doing good business, she had wished that Michiru could have been asked instead of her.
Actually, as she trekked to the small annex she had wondered exactly where her twin was. She hadn't seen him in a few days, and although that wasn't particularly unusual, she was starting to worry a little. It wasn't like him to not show up for meals. Though she herself had scarcely had time for them since the new semester begun, so she was hardly one to talk. With a sigh Kaname entered the annex, the heavy door creaking on its hinges as she moved it. Blinking, the student let her eyes adjust to the dimmer light inside, before she began her search. First on one shelf, and then another, but to no luck. Where were the charms? They couldn't really be this difficult to find. She had probably just missed them because she was so tired. Sighing again, she stood from her crouched position and took a step toward the door to start looking again. Unfortunately her foot caught on a loose nail. Letting out a shriek the girl found herself falling forward. With no time to catch herself, the only thing she could do was place her hands in front of her in hopes of breaking the fall. Just before she hit the floor her vision went black and she knew no more.
When Kaname awoke she found herself not in the shed where she had fallen, but outdoors. Blinking she slowly sat up, grimacing as her head throbbed with pain. What had happened? She had fallen, but... no, she didn't remember anymore. It's just like last time, she thought to herself. But no, this was impossible! She couldn't be back in the Sengoku period, she just couldn't be. For two years she had been completely unable to travel back, so why should that change now? She had to be dreaming or something. Yes, that was the only logical explanation. Wincing slightly as she shifted her body to a different position she had to wonder if she was mistaken though. It hurt a little too much to be a dream. Her dreams had been very realistic in the past, but hardly painful. "Could this... really be...?" She hardly dared to believe that it could be real. Slowly she stood up, marveling at how real every single movement felt. "But... how?" she wondered aloud. There was no logical explanation for it. Well, actually... there was one explanation that worked. When she fell, she could have inadvertently summoned her powers of Shikigami, and they had brought her back here. It was definitely possible. And seeing as how the only other way she knew for her to come here had died two years -- five hundred two years -- before, she had to believe that it was her own powers that had brought her back.
Slowly she smiled. She was back at last. She could see her friends again! The joy budding within her quickly dissipated as she realized she had absolutely no clue where she was. This was not good. Although she was fairly certain she could handle any demons that came after her, that didn't mean that she wanted to be attacked. And Kaname knew perfectly well that standing out here in the open like this was as good as placing a bulls-eye on her entire body. I have to get out of here. But... where to go? Quickly she looked about, trying to tell if she recognized anything. And, in a way, she did. The place did look a bit familiar. Was it... could it be the spot where she and Michiru had woken up the first time? There was only one way to find out. If she remembered correctly, to reach the nearest village, she had to go... right. No sooner than she had turned in that direction she heard a snapping sound coming from the nearby trees. Gasping, she managed to lunge out of the way just in time to avoid having her head bitten off by a youkai. The beast turned to face her and growled menacingly.
Raising a shaking hand, Kaname began to chant. "Oh flame burning bright, turn into a sword of wrath!" With the final words she swept her arm in the direction of the bear youkai, not even sure whether or not the Shikigami would work. Thankfully, a stream of red light, almost like fire, shot out from her body and hit the youkai. With a mad screech the bear died, its body disintegrating before her very eyes. Breathing a sigh of relief, Kaname knew she had to move now before more youkai came. Hurriedly she ran off in the direction of Akebi village, hoping that no more demons would find her before she made it to the small town. [/blockquote]
