The sibling pair lived peaceable with their parents distant silhouettes in their lives until Daitaro made a startling announcement. He said blandly that he had negotiated a marriage agreement on the behalf of his daughter to some minor lord to the north by the name of Tanizaki Nobuo. Urara immediately blew up with outrage; not even gentle Yukio could calm his sister. Mami told her daughter to hush, that a girl of fourteen needs to be married. Urara left the table, and her brother followed. Daitaro had ignored his family after his callous statement; Mami stayed by her husband. Meanwhile Yukio tried unsuccessfully to coax his sister into acceptance of her fate. It took some doing, but after nearly two weeks of cajoling, Urara finally resigned herself to marriage to Tanizaki. And so nearly a month after that fateful nate, Urara was packed and sent to her new home. It was hard for her to leave her home and brother - even her mother - and she hated her father, hated her husband for that. She was determined to make Tanizaki's life hell.
It made her anxious, the ride. The landscape quickly changed and became unfamiliar to the less-than adventurous noblewoman. It took about a week to get to the manor. It was one she spent in various states of anxiety and fury. When they arrived they were greeted by a round, short man whose eyebrows had more hair than his head. Urara worried this was him, but fortunately the man introduced himself as Tanizaki Osamu, her father-in-law. Then Tanizaki the Younger emerged. Tall and handsome with dark eyes, he looked as though he could charm even the birds. But for Urara, this didn't faze her. There was a cold look to him, if one looked close enough. He was pleasant outwardly, though, so she refrained from verbally battering him. They were formally married; all papers had been signed and trades completed. That night Urara experienced her first taste of hell.
Tanizaki was a sadist. He reveled the pain his near child-bride felt. He prolonged it, magnified it. He would bring it to a boiling point before allowing her a brief reprieve, then starting all over again. Urara didn't want to live through it, but paradoxically she refused to die. The days were spent in terrified anticipation for the night while the nights were exercises in sexual torture. It was a relief when she fell with child in her fifteenth year. Tanizaki refrained from touching her, for the baby's sake, but the reasons hardly mattered; he was out of her bed, and it would be a while before he returned. Not too long after her pregnancy announcement, a war broke out, and Tanizaki left to lead his army. Her father-in-law avoided her, probably aware of his son's sick preferences, so Urara was left alone.
While her husband was away a cousin of his visited. Yoji was not as handsome as Tanizaki but was far kinder. It was balm to her, the kindness he showered over her. He became a friend to her, and she fancied herself infatuated with him. It didn't take long for him to find his way into her bed. No one, not even the servants, were aware of their affair. She had been afraid, at first, but his gentle love was far different from her husband's sadist performances. The affair continued until Yoji left a couple weeks prior to Tanizaki's return. Urara missed him but didn't pine for him; he was a friend, even a lover, but not a love. Her fond memories cushioned her when her husband returned, bitter with defeat. He had brought a mistress back with him, some woman from some vilalge they had raided, but Urara didn't care. She pitied the girl, though.
It was a late autumn night when the pains began. Her maid was summoned who in turn called for the midwife. Soon the manor was in an uproar over the heir's impending delivery. It took a little over a day, but her soon was finally born. The moment she laid her eyes on him Urara was lost. She had expected to hate him, but she didn't, couldn't. He looked like her. She was moved to tears as he snuggled into her. Tanizaki came and told her how proud he was of her. It was surprising, but when she looked up at him the words rang true. Not that it pleased her; it was just unexpected. He named the baby Hideo then returned to his mistresses.
Now sixteen, Urara couldn't imagine being happier. She adored her son and was allowed unfettered access to her. Tanizaki was curiously absent from her bed. The days, though cold, were bright and clear and wonderful. She had gotten rid of her old maid - the chit was too quiet for her liking - and ended up with a chatty, spunky girl of her own age. They were fast friends and spent most of their time together. Rie, the maid, was fond of Hideo, which pleased Urara. It was like they were their own little family inside the inhospitable manor.
Urara wasn't sure when her feelings took a romantic direction for Rie. Before she knew it, she was in love with the other woman. It was hard to conceal, but somehow the noblewoman did it. Rie's presence became bittersweet. Urara realized she was only torturing herself, but she couldn't give the other girl up. One day it became too much time. She had known, back in her head, her secret would be disclosed but had refused to recognize it. It was not too long after the end of winter. They were in her private garden, basking in the warm glow, Hideo safely sleeping inside. Urara said something that made Rie laugh. The former looked at her servant and suddenly kissed her. Rie froze, and with a sinking heart, Urara tried to move away. The other girl held onto her, though. Rie whispered shyly that she had been waiting for Urara. Urara laughed and told her she loved her.
For nearly two years they continued their affair. Tanizaki seemed content with one heir and his mistresses. Rie and Urara indulged their love. Hideo was a smart little boy who loved his mother and Rie, who he referred to as an older sister. They were careful in their affair, but somehow Tanizaki must have found out. One night a man crept into her room. Rie had never stayed in her bed, and that night was no different. The maid slept in a pallet near her mistress. Urara lay exhausted in her own bed. She was asleep, never saw or felt what happened. She was stabbed through the chest and silently died of blood loss. Rie found her and screamed so loud the whole manor heard her. Urara's death was attributed to an assassin. Rie suspected Tanizaki was behind it, but, of course, could not prove it. So heartbroken, Rie quit the Tanizaki house and returned to her village.
Urara didn't realize she was dead at first. She sort of floated above her body and was confused for a moment. The man sheathed his weapon before crawling out the window. Urara moved over to Rie and tried to wake her, but her hand went through the girl. Then it dawned on her: She had been killed. She wanted to shout but couldn't. No, it had to be a dream. Urara hovered at the apex of the ceiling and waited to wake. She saw Rie find her and scream. She saw the panicked servants and doctors. She saw them wrap her up and take her away. No, I'm here! she wanted to shout, but she lacked substance. She was only a soul waiting to go to the other side. She fought it, though. I can't, I can't! She watched her lover leave, her husband crow and her son cry. It was painful, and she swore revenge on the man.
It didn't take long for Tanizaki to remarry. The girl was only fourteen, the same age Urara had wed, but was infinitely weaker. She suffered the same if not worse, but fortunately became pregnant quickly. A son. Hideo, now three, had a brother. It was strange to know that. Urara, by now, was a ghost but didn't reveal herself. Not yet. Tanizaki kept a close eye on the wench, but avoided her bed all the same. There must have been a market of women who reveled in torture he drew from. Urara wanted to kill the little boy, but couldn't do it. It would have been easy to possess his body and drown him, but...it wasn't his fault. Then the gods seemed to take it in their hands. The little boy fell ill as did his mother. The baby died; she did not. She grew mad with grief. Her husband was no comfort, so like her predecessor drew comfort from an alternative source. It didn't take long for the wench to run away with a guard, much to Urara's delight. Tanizaki, now the official lord of the manor as his father had died of the same illness as his grandson, was quite shamed. He didn't remarry but took to drinking. She haunted the place until Hideo was about eight before Urara decided to check on her family, confident nothing would happen for a while. At her parent's home she discovered horrible news.
They hadn't kept in touch after her marriage; the political turmoil and distance wouldn't allow many letters. So she hadn't known her dear brother had wed. She didn't know they hadn't had a child. She didn't know Yukio had been killed in the latest war, that Mami had died with grief knowing both her children were dead. Daitaro was old and would die soon; now he realized what he had had and callously tossed aside. He had no sons to succeed him, so he hoped his unknown grandson would have his holdings. On his deathbed, Urara appeared to him. He was scared at first, but soon he was pleased to see her. He begged forgiveness that she gladly gave him. Then he died, and she returned to watch her son grow. When he was seventeen he went out to battle, defying his father's wishes. Urara followed, helping him as she could. But that could not stop the arrow that hit him. Hideo was gravely wounded and placed in a private tent. When all had left, Urara came to him. He seemed surprised but unafraid. They talked for a while. Her face seemed to stare back at her, smiling slightly. "I've missed you," he said, though he couldn't recall her. "And I love you." Then he closed his eyes. His breathing slowed, and her baby died.
Urara wailed with grief which caused the men to come running. She barely was able to get out before they came in. She watched them bury her son before leaving for the manor. She waited for Tanizaki to come to bed before revealing herself. He was scared and begged for mercy. Urara told him flatly their son was dead. "I swore revenge," she said contemplatively, "and I seem to have got it." She left him, and it wasn't long until he died. His cousin, Yoji, inherited. The Abe house went to a distant cousin.
Urara never went after Rie; she couldn't bear to see her love married or unhappy. So she haunted the land, hungry for a body. She knew some people were able to give clay bodies to the undead, but she had no way of finding such a person. She kept her maiden name, disdaining her husband's defiled one. Not that it really mattered. Now Urara realized anyone she had known would have passed on and be at peace, but she can't give up and join them. She wants to live again, to feel and love. She wouldn't have Rie, nor would anyone replace her, but she wants to experience those feelings again so badly. She feels she was robbed of having a fulfilling life and insists upon having her due.
